The Livestock Conservancy is a nonprofit membership organization. Their mission is to protect endangered livestock and poultry breeds from extinction.
Included in their mission are over 150 breeds of donkeys, cattle, goats, horses, sheep, pigs, rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys.
Why We Support
Today, 24% of the world’s livestock breeds are in danger of extinction. Agriculture depends on genetic diversity to adapt to an ever-changing environment, like all ecological systems.
Traditional, historic breeds retain essential attributes for survival and self-sufficiency. Their hardiness, foraging ability, longevity, maternal instincts, ability to mate naturally, and resistance to disease and parasites is crucial for the health of our industry and our nation’s food security. Once lost….genetic diversity is gone. Forever.
